"Thousands of tired, nerve shaken,
over-civilized people are beginning to find out... that wildness is a necessity; and that forests and lakes are useful not only as fountains of timber
and irrigating rivers but as fountains of life."
~ John Muir
1898
What is wilderness?
Wilderness can be anywhere: the ocean, the desert and
Newport State Park

wilderness
The wilderness idea is an American
concept that evolved from the teachings of
Thoreau, Muir and Leopold.
A
"wilderness " is a place where natural forces prevail, where plants
and animals live out their lives largely undisturbed by humans. In our rapidly
expanding society, this means wilderness is fragile and rare, that it must be
cherished and protected. it is the reason why there is only a single road
leading into and out of Newport, and why an automobile campground is absent in
the park, and why off road vehicles are prohibited. Newport State Park is
located on a bustling peninsula in
Door County-Wisconsin, filled with
travelers, glorious shops and eateries.
But Newport is the quiet place, as close as you can get to wild nature among
Wisconsin Parks,
with extensive forests and untamed Lake Michigan shoreline.
For these reasons, the State dedicated Newport as a limited-development
wilderness park.
The only park honored with this distinction in the
Wisconsin Park System.
In 1985 the Wilderness Society was formed to support the
great need for protection of Newport Wilderness. The highest priority of
the Society is to maintain the solitude in the wake of rapid development
throughout the county.
The Goal:
To keep the park undeveloped, untamed and wild
Who belongs to the Society?
